CEREMONY SHOP, an exhibition Katrin Bongard and I organized in an empty shop in the historical center of Potsdam.
It simultaneously evokes the impression of a ceremonial venue and a gift shop. And questiones the relationship between them. ⁠⠀
The colorful cloths waving in the wind are of course a work by Katrin celebrating Tibetan prayer flags. In the background tar drawings from Himalaya by me.⁠⠀

Throwback to 2003. These figurines were created⁠ when the United States, Britain and a "coalition of the willing" had started the bombing of Baghdad on March 20, 2003.⁠⠀
One night I dreamt of these strong energetic women in the Iraqi desert. (modeling clay on chunks of a torn down studio wall)⁠⠀
⁠⠀
⁠Maybe it was no coincidence we still had our studio in the Rote Kaserne (Red Barracks) here in Potsdam at the time. ⁠⠀
The barracks were originally built for the Prussian Army.
After WW1 the Reichswehr used them and in 1933 the Wehrmacht took over the barracks.⁠⠀
The Red Army moved in after the Allies' victory over Germany in WW2.
After the withdrawal of the Russian troops in 1993 we kicked in.⁠ ⁠⠀
While we thought we had to deal with the history of the building, the present was already at war again.⁠⠀

For years I've been struggling with this way of improvising. I attributed it to my impatience rather than a real artistic approach. Only now I see the tremendous possibilities and advantages. During the work process nothing is fixed in advance. There is no welded fitting that determines the size and posture. No proper construction of the form in clay or plaster. No sketches, no model. Everything is in the flow. Anything can happen. From now on it's an exciting conversation with the material, with the figure.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
What does the sculpture want Where does it want to go? What does it want to look like? What is it’s message? The sculpture doesn't know either. I’m not just the executive organ, a tool of a higher power, a higher will. No, it is an exciting dialogue in which both sides learn something, clarify it. Something new is created for both sides. A form, a figure, and a thought, an idea manifests itself that only arises in the process.⁠⠀

Once it is decided that a figure should be cast, something strange happens. Suddenly it is no longer an independent sculpture, but mutates into a model. Almost always the model will be destroyed during the process. A fragile figure will not be able to be removed from the silicone mold undamaged. The original fragile figure dies in the molding process and rises for eternity in bronze. This is an essential artistic decision because it always means a change of meaning.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
For this reason, the »Monks« vigorously and successfully resisted not only a cast but even the wire to be cut off.⁠⠀

With these wax and paper figures I always had a bronze cast in mind.⁠⠀
Though the quality of the fragile surface in addition to the color spectrum of the material are essential components of a sculpture. It is a special challenge to convey this openness and transparency in bronze. Bronze is something different from paper, wax, clay, plasticine, or the many new sculpting materials, such as Miliput, Greenstuff, CX5, Apoxie etc. Although the figure can be molded extremely precisely, the cast is something completely new.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
There’s always the question whether a bronze cast can really produce something that goes beyond the original figure. There’s always a good chance the sculpture is finally finished in its original material. If this is the case, it must not be cast. ⁠⠀

The figures are each individually modeled from Green Stuff.⁠⠀
GS is a two-component modeling clay originally designed for filling gaps in miniatures or modeling additional details in a model. ⁠⠀
Katrin @kabongard.art made me aware of this great material.⁠⠀
Back in the 2000s when I was traveling a lot, I started working with it. You can work with it in the finest hotel, cause its clean, it doesn't dust like plaster or clay and it hardens overnight and then can be thrown into the suitcase without deforming.⁠⠀
Sometimes it was a little tricky withe the roomservice and especially at airports when they checked the plastic material, wire and a pair of wire cutters in my suitcase. ⁠⠀
But in the end they understood that you have to risk everything for the arts.⁠⠀
